Japan Coast 2 Coast
Challenge Completed!!
Three Nagoya Residents, took a weeks holiday in June 1-8 and successfully completed a coast to coast bike challenge in a sponsored challenge to provide clean water for poor families in Cambodia.
Tony Torres, Mark McBennett, and HOPE's very own Lowell Sheppard, pedaled their way from the Pacific to the Japan Sea at Japan's widest point and over some of Japan's highest and toughest mountain roads. They cycled just over 500 kms, and climbed an aggregate 8 vertical kilometers. So far they have raised over 600,000 yen which will change the lives of about 30 families.
You can see photos and read more about their journey at their blog www.japanc2c.com.
They are planning to organize a Team Coast to Coast Challenge in aid of HOPE in Sept 2011. If you are interested in forming a team of 3-6 cyclists please contact them through their blog.
The idea behind Japan Coast 2 Coast is a simple one: To explore the two great rivers, and three great mountain ranges of Japan by bicycle with a few friends and at the same time raise some money for people in desperate need of clean water.
We (Lowell, Mark and Tony) are going to cycle some of Japan's highest highways following the trail of Walter Weston who is considered the father of Mountaineering in Japan. We will start at the mouth of the Tenryugawa river, on the Pacific Ocean side of Japan and cycle along side the Southern Alps, cross over the Central Alps, to near the summit of Norikura and then take in the Annual Walter Weston Festival in Kamikochi before cycling to the Japan Seas coast following the Uwakami gawa river through Hakuba to Itoigawa.
June 1st - 8th
Please sponsor us per kilometer (or a fixed amount) and 100% the money will go to providing clean water to a needy family in Cambodia.
We are looking forward to exploring the beauty of our home country Japan in an eco-friendly manner while keeping in mind those lacking the most basic of life's need.
