Racing to Build a School in Afghanistan
Today, in the town of Jeloucha in the Konduz Province of northern Afghanistan, home to approximately 2,000 families, schooling is only available up to grade 6. If children wish to further their education they must travel 15 kilometers through rough roads, making it impossible for boys to attend due to the time and monetary cost and even more so for girls who cannot attend as they require an escort.
HOPE International understands that education is one of the cornerstones of development. Hard at work to make a positive change in Jeloucha, HOPE's latest project is the new Jeloucha school.
The school, which will be built according to the specifications of the Ministry of Education, will have a capacity of teaching an estimated 1,200 students who will attend in two shifts - one for girls, one for boys.
It will house at least 12 classrooms (one per grade), toilet and washing facilities, a small library, a playground and access to potable water.
HOPE International will be responsible for the construction of the facility. Once the school is completed it will be handed over to the Ministry of Education who will staff, stock and maintain the building.
The cost of the school is an estimated $100,000 USD (approximately 8,500 USD per grade). With your financial help this project can be completed as early as November 2008.
Please help us make this project a reality for the children of Jeloucha, give generously.
